Making Our Home Cozy!

The first chilly week of fall always changes the way a home feels. Windows closed and sweaters come out. The kitchen starts smelling like soup, chili, and cornbread since those are our favorite cold weather meals. Here in Michigan, that shift can happen quickly, and I love using it as a little nudge to make the entire home feel cozy.
This year, my fall decorating inspiration started with some plates I found at HomeGoods.

I found a set I loved, full of rich autumn color, and they became the starting point for the rest of the space. That is one of my favorite ways to decorate for a season. Instead of buying everything new or trying to completely redo a room, choose one piece you truly love and let it guide the rest.
A pretty plate can bring in color. A bowl can inspire a centerpiece. A stack of napkins can change the whole mood of a table. Fall decorating does not need to be complicated. It just needs to feel welcoming, lived-in, and ready for the cozy meals that make this season so good.
I Combined Old and New...
Years ago, when my dad passed away, I was given a set of Imperial Bone China that he had purchased while in Japan. My dad served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. While serving he visited Japan. While in Japan he bought two sets of China and sent it home to his mom and sister. Over the years one set of China ended up with my mom. When my dad passed away 8 years ago my mom gave me her set.
These special plates have a permanent home in my antique hutch. I combined the new plates from HomeGoods with my Imperial Bone China plates. I love how these plates look together.
I also hung a few of these plates in my kitchen. I used sticky tape to hang these on the tile. It is a fun way to change the feel of the kitchen with the seasons and add some color to my mostly white kitchen.
I also set my dining room table to get an idea for how our Thanksgiving table will look. I bought some burnt orange napkins and a matching table runner. I really love warm colors like burnt orange and golden yellows. I suspect my love of these colors came from growing up in the 70s. When I was young, our family home was decorated in burnt orange, olive greens and golden yellows.
I am looking forward to more cozy days and our first snow! I hope you enjoyed this short post.
