Our multigenerational story starts in the winter of 2019. My mom and dad were living in a senior independent living facility, and I was visiting them multiple times a week. I would stop by their place to help them and sometimes have dinner or lunch with them. My parents were paying almost $5000 per month to live in this senior facility, and they were not even needing assistance. My dad was having more medical issues due to his congestive heart failure and was going to be needing more assistance. If they stayed where they were and added extra care assistance it was going to cost around $7000 a month. We were shocked at the price and paused to rethink this as a family. I was a stay-at-home mom with a 7-year-old daughter and a husband that worked full time. I was already helping my parents and had time to help more if needed. We decided to join our two families together under one roof so I could provide more care for my parents. We figured my parents could save money by not having to pay the costly rent at the senior living facility...instead of draining their savings they could actually add to their savings each month and still contribute to our combined household.
We set out to find a home that could house all of us with ease and also provide some privacy and separation. We found our perfect home nearby and the key feature that we needed was the walkout basement. We envisioned turning the daylight walkout basement into a private living space for my mom and dad while my family and I could be steps away living on the main floors of the home. I could check on them multiple times a day and help with whatever needs my dad had. We could share some of the monthly financial costs and support each other in many other ways. We bought the house and finished the basement ourselves. My parents contributed to the cost of finishing the basement and planned to contribute to monthly expenses once they were living with us. The financial freedom this brought to my parents as well as my family was amazing. The stress of finances was lifted from all of us. This should be an option for all families to consider.
